We cannot spend a minute without our mobile phones. We use them constantly and we are living in an online world, rather in real. Nevertheless, this is a topic or even a debate for other day. Today we are focusing on the online world that should be user friendly. The research was done that says that we check our mobile phones over 250 times per day. We rather use our phones than laptops. We want to have all the applications adapted to our mobile phones.
It can drive you crazy if there is only a desktop version of an app and there is no mobile version of it. If you read emails on you smartphone, you know that this experience can range from amazing to awful. An email can look great on your phone, but often it happens that everything is just too small and that you would need glasses just for reading an email on your phone. Emails should be optimized for the use on the mobile phones. It is necessary that all apps, from Gmail to Outlook should be optimized. The designers should pay attention to the details; however, not all devices are the same.
What is responsive email system? The responsive email design is a collection of techniques, such as media queries, fluid grids, and fluid images, which aim to provide the optimal viewing experience across various platforms according to the official definition. The foundation of responsive email design is built upon CSS3 media queries. This does not work the same on the mobile phones as it does on desktops.
There are many reasons for the responsive design. Images are often too small and the same goes for text. Sometimes you cannot even see an image, because it does not want to load. People often delete that kind of emails, because they do not look good on their mobile devices. Over 70% of users delete their email if they do not look good on their mobile device. This statistics is quite compelling. Why is the responsive system better:
- You can enlarge the font
- You can enlarge the pictures – change their scale
- You can choose the colour outlay
- And many more options.
Responsive emails are supported by iOS Mail app, Android 4.x Email (OEM) app, Windows Phone 7.5, BlackBerry OS7, BlackBerry Z10. However, they are not developed and supported by any other devices. Building and designing a responsive layout can be hard. But as mobile users we just want a display with a button that toggles text.
There are three options of designs:
Scalable design – many email marketers are using it. If you read our previous post about e-mail marketing you know all about it and if you did not, you can click on the link. Scalable design works well on both desktop and mobile device. It is also named as mobile friendly.
Fluid design – is a design between scalable and responsive. This kind of design works best for text.
Responsive – takes everything from mobile friendly and fluid and improves it with the help of CSS styles. Building the responsive system is faster requires editing a few lines of code, rather than building tables or new design layouts each time.
Responsive emails get built faster. They are user friendly, meaning that people will not delete their emails, because they will actually be visually appealing. If you are in the field of marketing you will know that everything that happens, happens on the mobile devices. People no longer check their mail on their desktops, they open their mail on their mobile devices. How will you advertise if you do not use user friendly layout? Open rates increase when the emails are responsive and who does not wish for increase in their sales. The time and the hard work that goes into designing and creating a responsive system will be eventually paid off.
The sales will increase and you will have happy customers that will open their emails on their mobile phones. Even though if you are not in the field of marketing, you will appreciate the responsive email design, because who does not like a nice and user friendly layout. Mobile phones are indeed playing a leading role in our lives if we want them or not.
Customers no longer have to wait until they return to their desks to get a message – regardless of your feelings on living in an online world, the fact is that people like to read their emails anywhere and everywhere, as long it is on their mobile phones. At the reach of their hands. The responsive system is really a must in the email. Change it to the responsive system and you will see what change it will make with your customers.
